I am a Romanian / British artist living and working in London, UK.
My work explores the cycles of exile and return, and the transformation that happens in between. Displacement, separation, disconnection: these are not just physical, but emotional and existential conditions. The return is never a simple homecoming, but a journey of becoming.
Painting, for me, is a way to process, to unearth, to reimagine. It is a search for a way back, not just to what was, but to what could be.
I draw from personal experience. Growing up in Romania under Ceausescu’s regime, I experienced the duality of a magical childhood amidst political turmoil, followed by the trauma of the 1989 revolution. Those early contrasts – beauty and violence, belonging and estrangement – shaped my understanding of identity, home and the human condition. Leaving Romania was a self-imposed exile that sparked ongoing questions about who I am and where I belong, and these questions remain central to my practice.
My work frequently engages with myth, religious iconography, and enduring cultural narratives – such as the expulsion from the Garden of Eden – as frameworks for interrogating inherited beliefs about sin, guilt, and shame. Through these lenses, I seek to challenge old narratives and open up space for renewed meaning and transformation.
I bring a diverse background to my painting practice, spanning theatre directing and life sciences, both of which enrich and shape the emotional tone and conceptual perspective of my visual language.
I am currently part of the 2024/2025 cohort of the Turps Banana Correspondence Course.
